Real Postcards- London

Growing up in South America, foreign places were imagined through postcards. But they are not always a faithful translation of reality, often being more like idealized visions of a city.

In this project London sites are shown on postcards. However, unlike traditional postcards, the images include people in the foreground showing London’s diversity of cultures. The project explores ideas of citizenship and belonging.  I invited a wide range of groups and individuals to take part, many of whom may not have visited the city’s tourist attractions before or crossed certain invisible boundaries of a big city.

We made postcards, they wrote them, sent to family and friends around the world or kept them for themselves. Later the participants distributed copies of  the postcards throughout the city of London.

This is a multinational project started in partnership with All Change Arts and awarded an UK Arts Council Grant for the Arts and an IPRN fellowship for Malaysia.
